What Makes a Champion?
(Oct. 27, 2001)

Good evening, wrestling fans. Johnny Gallivan here again, to enlighten you on the state of the world; the world of wrestling, that is.

When I was thinking about a topic for this report, I got to wonder. Just what is it that makes me a fan of wrestling? Sure, I enjoy the spectacle, and the wild angles, and the celebrities, and fireworks, and such. But, when you boil wrestling down into its component parts, it comes down to one thing... performers.

Like the circuses of old, wrestling is a performance. And as such, it needs skilled performers to be successful; and I think that is what I enjoy about the sport. I like sitting there in my seat, or on my couch at home, and for 15 minutes being lost in the ballet that is wrestling. When you've got real talent in that ring, you don't see anything else. When I'm watching a match between say, Shane Brandon and Gabriel Blade, someone could take the seat right out from under me, and I wouldn't notice.

The skill that is required to entrance the audience like that doesn't come easily. Some guys are born with it, while others only develop it after years of practice.

When someone like Daemon Krav does something so sick, it makes you want to smack him yourself, that's what puts people in those seats. It's when you cheer for an underdog, like Kid Skull, in there with men three times his size, that's when your heart gets pumping. And when you see a man who has dedicated his life to the quest, finally achieve his goal of winning the big match, then you feel better about yourself.

So that brings me back to my original question. What makes a champion? Or a better question would be 'What makes a great wrestler?'. And, unfortunately, I don't have the answer. I don't think anybody has. If you ask a hundred wrestling fans what was their favorite wrestling moment, you'd likely get 90-some answers. That's part of the eternal appeal of the great sport that is wrestling. As the wrestling business molds and changes, there's always something new that has never been seen before, or a twist on an old idea. And that's what keeps us coming back.

I hope I've made some sense here today. Join me next time for my report entitled, "Where Have All Our Heroes Gone?" I'm Johnny Gallivan, and thanks for listening.
